Description

Brick, flat roof, doorway with fluted columns, tentatively modern, typical of the moderately progressive style that became popular between the wars.

It was built at the same time as the attached Thornton Little Theatre, formerly the Lecture Hall and was opened in 1938 by Sir Percy Meadows, Director of Education for Lancashire.

Since these pictures were taken the Library has seen some refurbishment, this included replacement of some windows with wood / wood effect frames, but the overall appearance of the building remains unchanged.

This picture taken from the 1946 Pictorial Review shows the Library & Lecture hall under construction.

Thornton Library was mentioned by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner in his book "The buildings of England, North Lancashire".
