Picture by Mike Pollard 2004 Description
Brick, flat roof, tentatively modern, typical of the moderately progressive style that became popular between the wars. It was built at the same time as the Library and the site at Four Lanes End was chosen after officials had looked at five other sites in the area. It took 12 months to construct and was opened in 1938 by Councillor Arthur Swarbrick. Various benefactors contributed towards the scheme to provide seating, the clock above the entrance and laying out the gardens. One of the first events at the then Lecture Hall was a talk called "the growth of contemporary Germany", the following year saw the start of WW2.
