Christ Church and its parsonage were built in 1835 on what is now Meadows Avenue at a cost of £800.  This cost was met by the then Lord

of the Manor Peter Hesketh Fleetwood, shortly before he began his grand plan to build Fleetwood which almost bankrupted him.

In 1835 the Township of Thornton included both Cleveleys, then known as Ritherholm, and Fleetwood.  Christ Church was originally under the Parish of Poulton-le-Fylde until in 1862 it was assigned its own parochial district and became Thornton's Parish Church.  The cemetery has stood on the site

since 1836 with the first burial being noted in 1837.

It was known locally as 'the little church in the trees' and its beautiful setting and ivy covered church were often commented on.  In early spring each year the churchyard was filled with a carpet of snowdrops and crocuses which, although not perhaps a carpet, can still be seen in the churchyard today.

The road shown in orange on the

map is Meadows Avenue,

previously known as Parr's Lane and Parish Road, which at this time only went as far as the church.
