Holmes - 1892

Holmes is one of the older hamlets in Thornton probably due to the fact that it stands on higher ground.  In 1379 in was in the hands of Sir Thomas Banastre who is probably the same Thomas Banastre who owned Thornton Hall.

There are references to there being a mill at Holmes at some point.  A reference is made to 'Old Holmes Mill Hill' and 'Mill Hey' is marked on the 1839 Tithe Map.

The road shown in orange on the map is *Fleetwood Road North and the road shown in red is *Holmes Road.
