Kelly's Post Office Directory 1873

 

Kelly's Directory is an alphabetical Trade Directory which was

 a forerunner for todays Yellow Pages.

   It lists residents along with their trade's and address.

 

 

Thornton

 

THORNTON is a township and ecclesiastical parish in

the parish of Poulton, joining Poulton township on the

south-east, and Fleetwood on the north, in the Northern

division of the county, hundred of Amounderness, Fylde

union, Poulton-le-Fylde county court district, Fylde rural

deanery, Lancaster archdeaconry, and diocese of Manchester.

The river Wyre bounds it on the east.  The township is

very extensive, principally agricultural.  ChristChurch is

a neat small building, erected in 1835, consisting of a chancel,

nave, and square tower with 1 bell : there are 323 sittings,

193 of which are free.  The register dates from the year

1836.  The living is a vicarage, yearly value of £110, in the

gift of trustees, and held by the Rev. Thomas Meadows,

M.A., of the Trinity College, Dublin.  Here is a Free school,

with an endowment of £38 yearly.  There is a Wesleyan

chapel.  The principal landowners are the trustees of Sir

Peter Hesketh Fleetwood and the trustees of John

Horrocks, esq.  The soil is various ; subsoil, clay.  The

chief crops are wheat, oats and potatoes.  The acreage is

6,387, of which 1,524 are water ; gross estimated rental

£25,509 ; rateable value, £22,273.  The population in 1871

was 5,203, which includes the town of Fleetwood ; the

population of the ecclesiastical parish of Christ Church

was 775.
