Prior to WW2 the signs on Thornton Station read Thornton For Cleveleys,it was a pretty busy place, 2 IOM boat trains 3or 4v fish trains depending on the London Markets, local pasenger trainevery 30 minutes, and a coal yard.

At Thornton Station the Coal yard was to the north of the platform were there was a spur with a set of buffers the coal waggons were left there for the coal merchants to bag it up.  I remember 2 of them Rileys (Lived at the bottom of Lesley Ave,)and Bill Brown (Horse and Cart) who lived on Lawsons Rd ( the house at the entrance to the caravan site.)

The 2nd signalman from Thornton crossing lived at the bottom of New Lane, the head signal man Jack Singleton lived in the large house across the Rd from The Bay Horse.
