The Oozle Inn was situated at Skippool, although exactly where we are not sure.  It is listed on the 1841 census between the vague listing of Skippool and that of Poolside.

Poolside is the area shown by the blue arrow alongside the creek.  The red arrow shows a building which today would have been in the car park of Thornton Lodge, could this be the Oozle Inn?

Oozle is an old english word for throat as in 'get it down your oozle'.  This could possibly mean that as has happened with many of the buildings in Thornton,  this is not the actual name of the pub but one that has has been adopted by the locals over time.

In 1824 the Oozle Inn is listed as being formerly known as Rauthmell's House, a cottage and garden, and later on is possibly known as Oozle Cottage.

1747:  Rauthmell's House
1765:  Rauthmell's House
1824:  Oozle Inn formerly Rauthmell's House
1855:  Oozle Inn
1870:  Oozle Cottage (?)

Skippool was once a very busy port receiving ships from Russia and Barbados carrying cargoes of wine, rum, sugar and tabacco.  It was also popular site for cock fighting, smuggling and press gangs with the local ale houses being infamous for their strong ale, contraband, spirits and drunken mariners.  We can imagine the Oozle Inn was quite a lively place wherever it was.
