Roads, Lanes and Tracks

Fleetwood Road North

Burn Road

From just before Fleetwood Road Methodist Chapel heading towards Fleetwood is shown on the 1912 OS map as Burn Road.

Four Lane Ends

.

The original Four Lane Ends was the junction where today Stanah Road, River Road, Hillylaid Road and Raikes Road meet.

Hawthorne Road

Occupation Lane

Hawthorne Road was originally known as Occupation Lane.  At the turn of the century it was still a picturesque, leafy country lane.

Meadows Avenue

Parr's Lane

Meadows Avenue leading from Victoria Road to Christ Church was originally called Parr's Lane.  It was renamed after the vicar of Thornton, Thomas Meadows M.A., who became vicar in 1870 and originally had a gate at either end.

Parish Road

On the 1912 Ordinance Survey map the road leads from Victoria Road to Christ Church and is named Parish Road.  Perhaps Parr's Lane was a local name for this road.

North Drive

Banks Avenue

Banks Avenue is shown on the 1912 OS map as the section from Victoria Road to West Drive.

 Victoria Road

Ramper Road

Victoria Road was originally called Ramper Road.  The name was changed to mark Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee around 1897.

 Woodland Avenue

 Mill Lane/Road

We have yet to find out why the name was changed as with Marsh Mill still standing,  Mill Road seems more apt.
