The Bay Horse

The earliest record we can find of the Bay Horse is on the 1841 census although we strongly suspect that it is older than this.
It is listed as 'Bay Horse Beer Shop' with Robert Eaves, Blacksmith, as the head of the house. It was common for the Innkeeper to be a tradesman for passing travellers and at times the beer selling was a side line to entice people to stop.
The Bay Horse Inn - 1892
On the 1845 OS map, image to follow, the Bay Horse is shown as a long narrow building adjoining the road and it is clear to see from the interior of the pub that there have been many additions over time.
Perhaps the original building was single storey and consisting of just what is today the sports bar and the snug opposite. For now that remains a mystery along with the date of that first building.
The Bay Horse - 2009
Today the Bay Horse is a busy pub and those early patrons could not have imagined their 'beer house' would one day have big screen TV's and the mysteries of Wi-Fi.
