Sandyforth on Trunnah Road was built as a private residence in 1876 by Ernest Thornton, having purchased the land 3 years earlier.  It was the home of several well known families in Thornton including Coun R O Nickson JP, a former chairman of Thornton Cleveleys Council.

Strangely in 1900 it was bought by William Tomlinson, a local corn miller, who sold it the following day to John Parkinson, a corn merchant.

In 1949 it changed hands again and was purchased by the Sisters of the Religious Order of Mercy in Burnley and for the next 28 years was used as a holiday home for the nuns.

In 1977 it changed use from a private house to a restaurant and opened as The Linden Tree.  It was jointly owned by the postmaster from Bourne, and a Blackpool restauranteur.

Today Sandyforth, though extended, still stands and after a time as The Victorian House Restaurant it was until recently the Last Orders Pub.

On July 31st, 2009 the pub will reopen under new ownership and is to be renamed the Sandyforth Arms.  It makes a very pleasant change to see a bit of history restored and the name, almost, returning full circle.
